The Yauan Alauagat are a very small people group living in Papua New Guinea's Sandaun Province, spread across a handful of villages in the northwest of the country. Their community is part of the broader New Guinea people cluster, where many small, village?based groups have historically maintained distinct cultural identities through family ties and local traditions. Their main language is Bragat, also known locally as Alauagat or Yauan.
The Yauan Alauagat live in rural settings where daily life centers on subsistence activities and cooperation within extended family networks. Gardening provides staple foods like root crops and bananas, while fishing and small?game hunting help supplement the diet. Homes are constructed using locally available materials such as wood and palm leaves.
Because their villages are remote and infrastructure is limited, travel beyond immediate communities is often by footpaths or small boats rather than roads. Access to formal healthcare, consistent education, and larger markets generally requires significant travel. The community depends heavily on shared labor, mutual care among neighbors, and local knowledge that has been passed down through generations.
The vast majority of the Yauan Alauagat identify as Christian, although only a portion are classified as evangelical believers, indicating that many may not yet have a deeply biblical understanding of the gospel. A minority continue to follow traditional beliefs, which may include faith in spiritual forces connected to nature or ancestors and can influence how people view life events.
In the Bragat language, Scripture translation has not yet been completed. There are no reported Bible portions, New Testament, complete Bible, or Jesus Film resources available in Bragat. Limited Scripture availability in the language of the community restricts opportunities for consistent engagement with God's Word in a form understood within everyday life.
The Yauan Alauagat need a clear and faithful presentation of the gospel of Jesus Christ that leads to genuine personal faith and spiritual growth rooted in Scripture rather than tradition or cultural blending.
Completion and distribution of the Bible in the Bragat language is a critical need so that individuals and families can engage directly with God's Word in the language spoken within their homes.
There is also a need for trained local leaders who can teach sound doctrine, disciple believers, and help establish strong, biblically grounded church communities.
Practically, access to improved healthcare, consistent education, and reliable transportation would support both physical well?being and opportunities for long?term spiritual and community development in their remote setting.
Pray that the Yauan Alauagat people would come to a clear and saving faith in Jesus Christ.
Pray that those who identify as Christians would grow in biblical understanding and not blend traditional beliefs with Christian teaching.
Pray for the completion and availability of the Bible in the Bragat language so that the community can engage directly with God's word.
Pray for faithful local church leaders to be raised up who can teach, disciple, and shepherd others.
Pray that traditional spiritual beliefs would be replaced by a firm trust in the truth of Scripture.
Pray for improved access to healthcare, education, and transportation to support overall community well?being.
